In 2019 we started to track local media stories about people hurt or killed in road traffic collisions in Newcastle. As it turns out, there are quite a lot of them.
Conventional traffic planning in the UK says that life and health can be traded with other benefits, so saving a few minutes can be, and often is, prioritised over everyone getting home safely. This is why the government is providing ~£150m to add a lane to the A1 but spending only a fraction of that on schemes that might actually make local roads safer for people to walk to the shops, or to make it safe for children to play or cycle to school.
It doesn’t have to be this way. How funding is prioritised is a political decision. Many countries are now adopting a ‘Vision Zero’ target of zero serious injuries and zero deaths. This approach says that life and health cannot be traded for other benefits, that people have a right to be able to travel home safely, and that simple errors shouldn’t lead to someone being seriously injured or killed.
Newcastle is changing, and is adopting many of the measures proposed by Vision Zero such as lower speed limits, low traffic neighbourhoods and protected cycle lanes. We hope this work can be accelerated to prevent more people being hurt or killed on Newcastle’s roads in 2020.
The following news stories are sourced from ChronicleLive and we would like to thank The Chronicle for being an excellent record of local traffic incidents, and for its reporting which largely follows advice by road safety groups for how incidents should be reported.
Summary information for injuries due to road traffic collisions can be found on the CrashMap website or on the North East Road User Casualty Dashboard maintained by the Traffic and Data Unit (TADU).

UK travel time vs injury “costs”
In the November 2018 Webtag data sheet:
- The perceived value of a car driver or passenger for use in transport models is £14.86 per hour for people working, £9.95 for commuters and £4.54 for other journeys.
- The cost per casualty for a fatality is £1.55m, £175k for a serious injury and £13k for a slight injury.
A one minute driven time saving on a road with 17,000 vehicles like Gosforth High Street would have a value of 17,000 * £9.90 (est value per vehicle per hour) * 1/60 * 365 ~= £1.02m per year. I.e. even a one minute saving would be seen, according to UK transport analysis, as being of greater benefit than avoiding five serious injuries per year or one fatality every eighteen months.
Further details on the analysis can be found on the Department for Transport website. The value of £9.90 is our calculation of a weighted average value per vehicle for working, commuting and other journeys, taking into account average vehicle occupancy.
Thanks for the information, a lot more needs to be done to make roads safer.
