Elections for Newcastle City Council are due to be held on 2 May 2019. As with last year we're keen to find out how the candidates propose to address transport-related issues in our community. To do that we've come up with five statements or pledges and we have asked each of the candidates whether they support these or if not what they plan to do instead. 
One in five people have some kind of disability. People with a disability are much more likely to be physically inactive and to rely on driving for day to day travel. Being able to cycle is a good way to improve health and well-being and to combat social isolation.
Many disabled people do cycle and find it easier than walking. They often use specially adapted cycles which tend to be wider, longer and heavier than the usual two wheeled bicycles.
Poor infrastructure is one of the biggest barriers 
The Chronicle has described it as one of the most hated junctions in Tyneside and also one of Britain's most dangerous roundabouts. So why is the Council is proposing more traffic and faster speeds, and claiming against all logic that this will somehow improve safety? 
At the Your-Streets Your-Views survey feedback meeting we asked residents for ideas on how to build a better Gosforth. In particular: Opportunities for more trees and greenery.
Routes to school and how to make them safer; Suggestions to reduce traffic on busy residential streets; and Locations or changes crossings on main roads. 
Newcastle City Council have released the Air Quality Feasibility Study that will be used for its forthcoming consultation. Whatever the final plan that is chosen, it must by law meet air quality limits within the shortest possible timescale. The question for the consultation therefore is how should that be achieved. 
Newcastle City Council has published its feasibility study for a Charging Clean Air Zone. This shows that, other than in a few locations, air quality can be improved to be within legal limits by 2021, sixteen years after they should first have been met. Although this is welcome progress, it does mean Newcastle has missed the deadline set by Government to produce a final plan by the end of December 2018. 
In November 2018, SPACE for Gosforth distributed a leaflet and survey to 14,300 households in the former East and West Gosforth wards and in Parklands ward.
