Children’s Safety – School Crossing Patrols

Dear Councillor Nick Forbes and Ms Pat Ritchie, We are writing to urge you to reconsider the decision made on 1 March 2017 to remove all but two of Newcastle's School Crossing Patrols. Whilst we understand that difficult decisions must be made as a consequence of a reduced budget, we feel that children's safety in particular should be considered a priority. Read more [...]

Choo! choo! It’s the Gosforth Bike Train!

A Bike Train is a led ride along safe routes, and the idea is that it shows people a good route to work to get them started commuting by bike. I heard that GoSmarter was running a Bike Train from Kingston Park through Gosforth to Quorum business park and decided to try it out. I checked out the route and timetable online. I registered for the Bike Train, joining at my nearest stop which was Regent Centre, and received a confirmation email. The journey On the morning of the Read more [...]

Electric bikes in Gosforth Central Park

E-bikes are popular all over the world and increasingly popular in the UK as more people take to bikes for shopping, commuting and leisure. You pedal an e-bike just like a normal bike and the motor gives you a boost when needed to travel further, climb hills or carry shopping and children with ease. They're a fun and practical way to get about and stay active, especially for older people or those that might not otherwise be able cycle. Read more [...]

Can protected cycle lanes be good for business?

If you were asked to name one place that's more in thrall to the car than the UK, most people would say the USA. That's why, when American cities concerned about road safety, pollution and congestion have wanted to rebalance their roads to favour healthier and less polluting alternatives, they have had to make their case in very strong terms. This has resulted in studies that show the impact of pedestrian and cycling improvements on safety as well as on travel preferences, on house prices and on Read more [...]

Broadway to Brunton Lane | Consultation Review

Judging by the 78 responses to the ‘Broadway to Brunton Lane’ consultation most people agree with the aims of the scheme, not least the prospect of a cycle lane safe for children to use, though there are a few details to work through. This is a summary of what people said. As we said in our previous article here the current road layout is poor for those walking and cycling. Comments reflected this. “I don't think most people realise just what an awful road this is now if you are Read more [...]

Broadway to Brunton Lane – Comments by 21 December 2015

Newcastle City Council has announced a consultation for new cycle lanes and other improvements to the Great North Road between Broadway and Brunton Lane, and is asking residents and visitors to provide comments on their proposals. Currently this is a busy dual carriageway with frequent buses and fast-moving traffic: it is hard for pedestrians to cross and is largely unsuited to all but the bravest of cyclists.  It is also the single main route into Brunton Park, Melton Park and the other Read more [...]

space for Gosforth is launched

Newcastle City Council will soon release its final plans for Gosforth High Street for one last "technical consultation”. Responding to this consultation is your one last chance to influence how the High Street will look for the next generation. No comment could mean no change, leaving the High Street as one of the busiest, most congested roads in Newcastle: a road choked with traffic during rush hours, exhaust fumes passed from one car to the next; cars and bikes rushing to beat traffic Read more [...]
